On February 19, 2016, Janet Diveky retired from her position as Library Technician for the Public Works and Services Technical Library after 13 years of service. Janet’s long career in libraries began in Cape Town, South Africa where she studied library science and had her first library job at the South African Public Library in 1960. Since then she has worked in libraries in South Africa; London, England; London, Ontario; the University of Toronto; the University of British Columbia; and Weledeh Catholic School Library in Yellowknife.

As a second career, Janet received her College Teacher’s Certificate at Toronto Teacher’s College. Together with her husband, George, they have lived and taught in Kuujjuaq and Inukjuak in Arctic Quebec, Pelly Bay, Coppermine, Rankin Inlet, Rae Edzo and Yellowknife. (Community names are listed by their names at the time Janet resided in these communities.) In 1988, they moved back to Yellowknife where Janet became the Library Technician at the Public Works and Services Library.

After two years, she could not resist going back to the classroom, first at École St. Joseph School and then Weledeh Catholic School. After her retirement from the Weledeh School Library in 2002, Janet, the “reluctant retiree”, once again became the Library Technician for the Public Works and Services Technical Library.

Janet is also a tireless volunteer with the Yellowknife Association of Community Living where she is the driving force behind their major fundraiser, the Gumboot Rally. She inspired the NWT Library Association to enter a team and this has become an annual NWTLA event as “Seussmania” competes in the Gumboot Rally every spring. Janet is also an avid potter and volunteers with the Yellowknife Guild of Arts and Crafts.

When not in Yellowknife volunteering and spending time with her children and grandchildren, Janet will be with George on their sailboat on the Sea of Cortez, Mexico. (But some people are already predicting Janet will be back at work in some capacity soon. 🙂 )

We hope Janet, although retired, continues to be an active member of the NWT Library Association.
